A paper is accepted to ICWSM 20!

Our paper titled “Trust me, I have a Ph.D.: A propensity score analysis on the halo effect of disclosing one’s offline social status in online communities” is accepted to ICWSM 20, done with Haewoon Kwak, Hyunho Song, and Meeyoung Cha. It’s almost been three years from the start of this project. Thanks to the patience of my collaborators! Read more

I’m thrilled to join UCLA Communication as postdoc!

I’m leaving QCRI to join UCLA Department of Communication. I will work with Prof. Jungseock Joo, who studies multimodal communication using computer vision/deep learning, in a project which aims at developing an integrated research framework for tracking information flow across multiple communication channels by automated multimodal content analysis using text, image, video, and audio. A paper is accepted at ICWSM-21.

Published:

A paper titled “Understanding the Effects of Editing News Headlines on Social Media Engagement” is accepted at the next year’s ICWSM. Yay! This study was done with my former colleagues in QCRI: Haewoon Kwak, Jisun An, and Sanjay Chawla. I don’t know whether the conference will take place physcially or virtually, but hope see you next year! :) Read more

A research article is out in Journal of Advertising (IF=6.302).

Published:

Our paper titled “Automatically Detecting Image–Text Mismatch on Instagram with Deep Learning” is published at Journal of Advertising, which is ranked at the top rank in Communication (IF=6.302). To address the usage of brand-relevant hashtags for promoting brand-irrelevant content, we propose to use deep learning for the detection of such brand-incongruent content from three cues: image, text, and metadata. We also discuss the advantages of machine-learning methods as a novel research tool for advertising research. Read more
